The “A~League” is set to SOAR! Now that OUR Boundary Quandary has been resolved we will PRESS~ON! Onward and Upward around those bases we will roll. This truly is an uplifting experience. That must move forward. We were running into that sticky proverbial red tape. The boundary rules in Williamsport are very explicit when it comes to boundaries. Unlike others in little league history we were not looking to bring in ringers. Just PLAYERS!! Unfortunately we all live within a 30 mile radius of our fields.
Everyone on the SPECTRUM understands the logistics. It’s a No-Brainer. We are 1/ 100- 150, in some instances as low as 1/70! So to mathematically have enough eligible players to field a league from 1 city is IMPOSSIBLE. In a 3- City District still could be tough. More and more kids are moving to California so who knows someday that could be feasible. However, for Our Summer League purposes and beyond we will write our own AUTISM~ FRIENDLY Rulebook! So we will take control and branch out on our own and SPREAD OUR WINGS!! Afterall OUR KIDS are Angels! In their way they truly are.
So…this AUTISM BASEBALL moves forward w/ President Manny Zapata, Vice President (creator) Lora Mancini, w/ strong support from myself Kelly Green, Matt Parker, Carol Zapata, Megan Spano and more to be named!! We are flying high!! The fun is contagious and it’s bound to spread! With great reason. It is a NEW WAVE! A wave for OUR KIDS to “catch”~for a change! People need to see and think about both sides of the NEURO~DIVERSITY Coin. They would be so much the better for it. All people have to have outlets to create self-pride in order to change and really grow. It is a basic human instinct! So all that being said….
It looks like we have 6 teams!! 2 Rookie, 2 Minor & 2 Major! It is going to be a lot of FUN with the addition of 2 more teams! A brand new Ballpark to call our home and NEW FRIENDS on our Horizon. Summer and Fall League is here. The future’s so bright I gotta wear shades! If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it 100 times. …We cannot be BOUND…the Parents of ASD individuals know NO ~BOUNDARIES! Everyday can be a snowflake and you do whatever it takes to keep it from melting down. Like everyone else some days are great and some days are not. But, unlike EVERYONE else there aren’t available venues for our kids to do the everyday, take-it-for-granted things. The things “that kids do.” So when we have a chance to do something like this? If that means driving to and from TIMBUKTU WE WILL DO!

What can I say about the Dad’s of the A~LEAGUE?!! Can you say…’HAPPY CAMPERS’?? I can, because frankly we ALL are. But as most know…MEN are the best campers and HAPPIEST when camped out watching SPORTS! Live or otherwise! So many of our father’s had closed the door on a little league experience. After an AUTISM Diagnosis most MEN have a huge transition to make. The transition from great expectations to no expectations. For some men that is frankly JUST TOO MUCH to take. Some may never “get it”, never release those expectations and embrace the “NOW.”
It is a tough pill to swallow admittedly. But, nonetheless the medicine must be taken. in order to move on!! Jon Hope of the San Gabriel/Pomona Regional Center had asked me in the spring if I would sit on a parent panel. The panel would speak to his staff about …living with AUTISM 24/7! Perfect for me because, these days it seems like that’s all I do!! He also recruited a few other Moms. A-League creator Lora Mancini and another great A-League Mom Nicole Johnson. It was an amazing opportunity. Something struck me as very timely. At the end there was a GREAT QUESTION. A question about what about the MEN …how could we help engage the men in their child’s lives…???
Well you KNOW MY ANSWER………Baseball Baby!! This experience was such a GREAT PRECEDENT! Autistic people deserve this right to a happy healthy way to grow up. To bond with their father’s especially! There is just something so transformative about sports. That on the “same team feel.” We witnessed the power it holds!!
I have never seen such a HAPPIER GROUP OF GUYS!!
Happily trekking out to the ballpark each week not knowing what to expect yet, hoping for the BEST! Well…in MY MIND they got what they were hoping for and MORE!!
HAPPY Father’s Day to the awesome ,supportive~ willing to understand ~A-League Dads!!
See you NEXT SEASON!!

Already in the works! We are barely taking a breather… because baseball is still calling! We won’t be home if the Avon lady reaches out this Summer! The moms of the A-League have other plans! Not to leave out the Dads~ Because THERE IS a strong representation on board. They will have to make a new lawn-mowing schedule. Saturday mornings are taken!! We’ve had a very good turn-out for our Registration so far!! With many players returning! It is very exciting to see the influx of kids ready to give it a shot! AWESOME!
Today we had an assessment “so to speak” …just to get an idea of each player! WooHoo 3 girls were there today! Love to see that, I grew up in the dugouts of Glendora and Covina!! So lets hear it… any more players with pig-tails?? C’mon down!! PLEASE!
In the initial season the teams were randomly drawn. It worked out great for the most part. This time around we would like the “Crushers” and the “Bullets” to have a little more edge. Not to keep score and be competitive in that manner. However, we think some players need to bring-up their skills with kids near or at the same level ! It will be a delicate chemistry! We ARE all a little like mad scientists anyway, so it seems fitting lol! (I have said AUTISM means : “Finding your Formula” ) http://autismhwy.com/blog/?p=47 I have complete faith we are up to the task. We understand AUTISM & BASEBALL…and what an Explosively Awesome Combo they are!!
I had a very nice Brunch planned with a very hard-working friend so I missed today’s evaluation. I arrived as they were breaking it up. I first thought that it was a full blown game~ there were that many people there! Fantastic to see that the enthusiasm has spread!! They will not be sorry GUARANTEED!
Lora Mancini and Carol Zapata…Awesome Aut~ Moms carried out the duties today with the help of a very nice student working on his service hours. This is great, programs that encourage our youth to research and reach-out to Autism!! I can’t say enough about that ! Here’s hoping more and more of that is created! There is a real chance here to engage our youth in some… more than worthy, community service. Much like what the S.D.H.S. J.V. Softball team did this past season. The AWESOME TEAM of beauties came out to help guide our kids around the bases! Many smiles later, one of the young women did an amazing thing. Creating a service project Athletes for Autism.” Our hats off to Kayla Norrie !! THANK YOU to you , your sister Brianna and the entire team!! Oh and a special thanks to Wyatt’s “CRUSH” Jennifer Hampson! These girls recruited and scheduled extra help for each A~LEAGUE practice and game! BEYOND BOMB !! called “
Coach Megan Spano was invaluable as well! The JV Softball coach that ALSO works with autistic children!! So many AMAZING people gave of themselves. Going above and beyond at every turn. What a wonderful group of people. So hoping we all do it again and again!! Season AFTER Season. Recruiting new faces along the way!!

…as we tick into SUMMER from SPRING! What an amazing spring we have had! The very 1st ALL~ AUTISM~DIVISION! Thankyou to LITTLE LEAGUE, San Dimas Little League …League President, Tim Roe and Mom on a Mission “DIVISION VISIONARY” Lora Mancini. Without the ALIGNMENT of these entities we would have been missing the boat this season yet again. HAPPILY not the case!
With this initial season we have seen and felt amazing things. For the MOST PART… very clear sailing! Our young players connecting and bonding with peers like never before! Social SKILLS to the 10th POWER! I have not really seen one meltdown or unhappy kid in ALL of the practices and games. We HAVE HAD a few stomps, pouts and whoops around the bases from time to time. The only bat throwing is not in anger …more in danger. Whoops! Some of the kids are not quite sure about that dropping of the bat ritual. (We will be working diligently on that to be sure…)
Which we will have time to do …this SUMMER!! Woo Hoo ~The adventure continues! Our season ends June 5th… and after we Celebrate that & take a couple of weeks off…WE WILL BE BACK!! With a Summer-League! So Awesome… especially this summer, when California has ~completely~ cut our Summer DAY-CAMP Budget to – ZIP ! Uh Oh…everyone with a kid on the spectrum knows…busy is good. So busy, “lucky us” will be!! Thanks again LITTLE LEAGUE, S.D.L.L., Tim Roe, Lora Mancini…& the hard working moms and dads on the board and on the field. SUMMER in the DUGOUT!!
Our hats are off to you!! You have affected such change and happiness that the effects will be rippling on for years! How is that possible you say ?? Simple. Two words. SELF ESTEEM! A simple yet, pure basic human need. Something we have not been affording these amazing kids. Seems society had decided that they didn’t have the skills or desire or the NEED. Society has been ~Wrong~dead wrong! I have seen EVERY kid open up. Regardless of “how-autistic” you would consider each player. We ARE all variations on A theme…and this baseball breaks BARRIERS! I have been seeing it, living it, breathing it …..WRITING IT!!
I have thoroughly convinced myself and anyone else who’ll listen! This IS the way to go SELF ESTEEM THERAPY …so simple. The season has only been a handful of weeks…just thinking of the continued confidence and happiness we can build… WOW ,The possibilities are SO GREAT!! Lora is taking steps to let the little league organization know how important this season has been. She also needs our help to explain the value of an all AUTISM DIVISION! If we have the numbers to fill teams in each community then I say…”keep ‘em seperated.” It just makes sense for purposes of commonalities and cohesive teaching styles. I’ve been trying to tell people AUTISM is a whole other entity. ISSUES and VARIABLES. But if all players have the same issues and variables it is so much easier to move forward as a group.
A Common Understanding! It’s a beautiful thing …we strive for!!
Please E-Mail…….firstname.lastname@example.org to tell him why it is beneficial to continue on with an AUTISM DIVISION….. Parents, Interested Parties…and…Proffessionals PLEASE !
Thankyou Greatly! AutismHWY!!
