Well…I have been at it again!! I love this opportunity to put my talents to good work! This past weekend I traveled to Carpinteria California to create some ART!! This wonderful beach community just south of Santa Barbara has become a new favorite spot for AutismHWY, www.makingfriendswithautism.com/ and I this year!!
The Curious Cup Bookstore has been proudly displaying our “Making Friends with Autism” Coloring Book this summer…thankyou for that Kiona Gross and company! We are so honored to be affiliated with your fantastic shop and town!! Beautiful scenery, weather and people. What could be better?
A chalk art event!! That’s what! Girls Inc. of Carpinteria held just that…and I was there…NATURALLY! Doing my thing under the summer sun!! How FUN!! Talking to passer-bys about my ART and the meaning behind it…..Coloring Perceptions through Positive Imagery. Giving folks the TOOLS to ease fears and erase stigmas that have been assigned to AUTISM! Shifting and changing. EVOLVING!!
As we shape information and attitudes for those UNAWARE. I am having …the time of my life!!
Creating the Curious Cup bookstore logo in chalk was the least I could do for the amazing support the Autistic Community recieves from Kiona and her delightful bookstore!! Earlier this year Debra Hosseini’s amazing book “The Art of Autism” and its artists were recieved and showcased! Beautiful all the way around! The Author herself, the works of ART and the amazing stories each Artist has to SHARE!! Awesome job Debbie your amazing energy and fantastically talented Autistic son Kevin are Carpinteria superstars in our book!
Creating public perceptions can be uplifting…engaging people with stories of Autism understanding and how humanity can learn so much from the Autistic Mind has become my NEW CAREER…and I wouldn’t have it any other way!! Thankyou to ALL of my Awareness Angels……! I believe we are a most formidable ARMY!! Battle on!!
And…CHALK ONE UP…for The ‘GOOD~GUYS’!!

Does it, really ? Apparently to some more than others. I love words. Delighting in wordplay I love to juggle and barb, dart and twist to my little hearts desire. So I am always puzzled when I see some take words to heart. So very literally often times taking offense. That is where we are at as a culture. To me that says it all. INTERPRETATION and TRANSLATION> We always get lost in it. (?) FINALLY. Autism is here to point that out , define it and tune the world in~ into a spectrum of ways to see things in another hue.
” We do not need to re-invent the wheel.” ~ “We need to teach people to harness their systems.” says Leonora Gregory Collura. I so, love her mentality! Her language. Being an Autistic woman she KNOWS of what she speaks. As she teaches the paradigm from the inside out. She has a way of engaging you with her WORDS and her deep knowledge of how the Autistic system operates, variates , evolves and grows. As ‘ Leonora Speaks’ …she has much to teach us all. It is so exciting to see her use of the english language orchestrating history. A new history and way for Autistic People that has been a long time coming. WORD !
A day longed for by many. When we are understood, accepted and most importantly utilized in the market place. For far too long this language that is debated has defined people. Autistic Person, Person with Autism, Dis-abled, handi-capped, special needs, low functioning / high functioning and the list goes on. How about this~~> We ALL function on different levels HIGH, MEDIUM & LOW-using whatever cylinders are firing at the time lol! A completely true statement for those of you being honest. Words that describe are just that…WORDS. Letting words hurt and change your mood or cause a fight is so unnecessary. People don’t always know the RIGHT WORDS to say when it comes to ‘differences’. The majority of folks can be terribly awkward and uncomfortable…damn near anything could pop out of their mouths!
With that in mind I submit we call a ‘grace period’ on the language. Do not let a word someone may use to describe a person’s “uniqueness” offend you. As we define the future with awareness to the masses ; concerning the reality of Autism and the people living with it. We need to cut people a break while talking about and teaching our issues as low functioning/ high functioning …special needs PEOPLE!!! lol~ Tomato…Tom-AUT-o!! Let’s just get the world aware! Try not to let language become sticks and stones.
We are all here in the same boat don’t let WORDS, rock it. Share the paddles, pool the resources…bridge all of the gaps. This is the mentality we are operating under as we gain momentum for our Fall International Naturally Autistic People Awards & Convention. Working together we all have talents to share ~here and NOW. Not waiting for research to find a cure or by building new complexes for production of ’Autism wheel’ creation. Let the ‘Big guy’ do the research because they have the dollars marching in. The rest of us need to concentrate on teaching useful information and creating comfortable ways for all people to exist and thrive.
Creating venues and jobs for the Autistic population is where commerce needs to head. We have a stimulus package just waiting to be unwrapped!! Jobs; mentoring, teaching skills, coaching employment and growing self esteem. Seems like a big production to me…worth millions.

What a blessed and wonderful thing that is, can be and will be! When 2 heads are better than one…imagine 2 brainstyles (or however many there are lol) being BETTER than one. Great minds think alike…and GREATER minds think differently.
As Temple Grandin so rightly says…take away the Autistic Mind…take away much of the amazing technology of today! No brain is perfect. Underneath our diagnosis/ and labels we are all human. Wired in differing ways. Functioning on differing levels. Understanding this paradigm is what happens when you love someone with Autism. It becomes second nature. You feel it and breathe it and if you open yourself you understand it. Through that understanding your senses become heightened. Life to the 10th power. It should happen to everyone.
Annie Eskeldson said it beautifully on the AutismHWY Fridays Blogradio show recently…”I love the person Autism has made me.” It is something we in the Autism community all feel collectively! True, we seem to have alot of other issues, factions…and YES~~>divisions. But, I think we all can get behind the words that Annie spoke. We have all said them. If we havent, surely we have felt them.
Autism SHINES…It shines a certain sensability to you. A light that had been fading with all of the inconsequential data we barrage ourselves with minute by minute. Autism helps you to take a pragmatic look at how the brain processes the information it recieves. Such a simple life skill we should all cultivate. At the stem of our existence truly!
So I wonder why have we overlooked it for so long? The simple exhilerating fact that people need to reshape humanity by getting into our own heads! Literaly. Autism has taught me this. Autism presents you with a deeper knowledge of theory of mind. Would I have ever taken the time to consider how others think?…probably not! I have been so ‘brainwashed’ into believing that there is only one brain-style… and that we all think alike in life. Those learned assumptions are what impede Autism Awareness. Opening the doors of people’s processing and meeting those minds with information is our goal.
Teaching children about the brain and how it operates is the goal of Our ”Making friends with Autism” COLORING BOOK…when people become “brain aware” …this world will be a safer place for our ASD population! So come on people…what are you waiting for?? Meet some amazing people here on AutismHWY.com! Make friends with Autism…and see what a mind-opener it is!! Perhaps in that process of examining the differing brain-styles you will meet your own mind in a whole new way!!
Purchase your COLORING BOOK here!! http://www.edgeoftheworldclothing.com/AutismHWY/index2.php

It’s here again. The day I hate May 1st. I love to make a ‘Big Joke’ about it , how awareness doesn’t end on May Day…S*O*S *…!! Sadly enough my joking does’nt alleviate my underlying current. My current despair in so many. So many that will put the “Awareness Box” back on the shelf…and be on their merry way.
It is so crazy when something is dubbed a ‘crisis and a health epidemic’ that one lil month in April will “do the trick”. Get REAL please. A few segments on a few stations controlled by an elite few, does not cut it. A National message that NEEDS HEARING. A government with no plan , idea or efforts to educate society in what is going on with our kids! Talk about COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS!!
Parents and people who care about Autistic People are the only ones doing anything! We all struggle because our awareness efforts become a 2nd career. When we were barely getting by with the first one!! There are never enough hours in the day when you have this need that we do. The need and desire for the world to understand my child. The need to PROMOTE friendship through COMMON UNDERSTANDING!! We are good at spreading the awareness to each other. Unfortunately we already ”GET IT”. Everyone else….not so much! In 2010 with numbers as low as 1 in 70 in some instances~ there are STILL people that have such minimal knowledge about Autism.
We need to create a whole new cirriculum. Instead of the “3 R’s” reading, writing and ‘rithmatic. I propose we expand that to one more “R”~ Reasoning. A whole subject called ~” THE BRAIN”. Teach children cognitive skills, processing and sensory matters…so many things that would be helpful to create Autism Awareness ,understanding empathy and more. Can you imagine children learning at a young age how important it is to understand how the brain functions? It will be a whole new world. A brave new world!
A world that understands it is not necessarily a bad thing to have Autism. It is a different thing. A world that must have a working knowledge for daily co-existance with neighbors thinking differently. Children understanding the brain-styles will make the world much more effective. These aware kids that will be there flanking our Autistic population when we as parents are gone. That time will come and we cannot continue waiting 11 months each year for APRIL hoping for a bit of coverage!! I am heading full steam ahead with my concerns about no public awareness policy! We cannot do it alone without huge dollars backing our campaigns. That much is clear! Our governments needs to step up. The dollars wasted on political campaigns alone is astounding. How about putting that money where awareness should be.!!
