What can I say??? I have just experienced something so incredible, that I am not quite sure where to begin! If you are a regular reader of this blog you know that I am rarely at a loss for words!! The 2nd Annual Int’l Naturally Autistic People Awards and Convention! Congratulations to ANCA www.naturallyautistic.com , you have done it again ! Last year AutismHWY.com had the pleasure to sponsor and help facilitate this event on-line ! This year I was honored to have been appointed the U.S. liaison for the event and able to appear as a workshop leader and audience member! Wow…like I said at the top Speechless.
The event was a 3 day affair. Friday night the Opening ceremony performances and Art exhibit were sensational! Works by this years recipients Esther Brokaw, Kevin Hosseini and Maria Iliou were featured! Maria also a recipient this year of the community mentor award! We also were treated to paintings by last years recipients Joel Anderson ( www.joelsvisionarts.com ) and Danielle Bowman ( www.powerlight-studios.com )!! Two amazing young people fully accepted and supported by their cool families! So important to the equation. Acceptance and the freedom to allow your child to follow their dreams. To see where the HWY of creativity takes them! As a matter of fact these two young artists had an appointment with an animation studio today here in Vancouver British Columbia!! Talk about diversifying! AWESOME!
We were entertained by past and present Award recipients! 2011 recipient Samantha Rudderham of Scotland. 2010 recipient Scott Siegel of www.arrestmysister.com and the superbly multi talented Joel Anderson! Wow…such amazing voices and perspectives! Scott’s performance was stunning! His father Michael Siegel told me it was the finest perfomance of his song “Everything I know.” Scott is not just an incredible voice. The lyrics he creates are stunning! Please take the time to explore this young mans talent! His Saturday workshop was a look into how he creates his music. Such an amazing experiential session in brilliance! How awesome that these artists and their families took this leap of faith…all the way to Canada! Bravo to you ALL!
2011 Award Recipient Erin Clemens a brilliant young woman from Pennsylvania sang her song “Crazy” and recited her amazing lyrics for the wowed audience. Such emotion revealed. Often times it is said of our population that they have “no filter.” Which is code for AUTHENTIC! How refreshing…young people that are real! Not clones of a media that has gone out of bounds. Where million dollar reality TV productions pretend authenticity. Pure unadulterated people. Wouldn’t it be nice to have more of that?! Well, AutismHWY and ANCA Naturally Autistic believe it… and will work tirelessly until that is achieved. An enviornment of respect and resource for people on the Spectrum! Where young women like 2011 recipients Isabel Doucette and Jacynthe Geschke are recognized by their Canadian Government for their accomplishments! Great job girls!
“A different way of being.” A phrase used by the organization from India 2011 recipients “Act Now for Autism”…we celebrate this philosophy and organization. An organization in Los Angeles…” Exceptional Minds” was chosen to recieve a beautiful statuette created especially for the Awards by www.melonglass.ca the artists stated that these pieces represent the soul rising! Congratulations to you all. Thanks to keynote speaker and workshop leader USC Professor Lars Perner a “Scholar with Autism”…who has an upcoming book with that very title. What an incredible mind! Speaking of incredible minds Leonora Gregory Collura along with husband Charlie Collura and son Anthony Gregory should be very proud of this ripple affect they have begun with The Int’l Naturally Autistic People Awards and Convention! A ripple of change in a world ready for authenticity to rule once again. a
Last but not least… A very special shout out to Jeremy Bernstein! If you remember he is a very good friend of AutismHWY’s after being such a fun and generous vendor at our “Show YOU Care~ Be Aware” Chalk Festival last spring. Jeremy won judge’s pick for submitting his creative jewelery business. He also won the audience’s heart for his comical and BRILLIANT AUTHENTICITY!! What a weekend we had!………………. To be continued…………in 2012, with the 3rd Annual Int’l Naturally Autistic People Awards. See you THERE!

If you haven’t heard of ARREST MY SISTER than you are just not reading this blog!! This band is the NEXT BEST ~THING! The music is soulful, spiritual and ROCKING!! These guys put on an amazing LIVE SHOW! The band has only been together for 1 yr. and they play together perfectly. You will love the ORIGINAL SONGS mixed in with some all-time favorites! Scott Siegel AMS’s front man…Singer/Keyboardist/Songwriter is an autistic savant!
He has written over 300 songs. His family knew he was a gifted individual but the depths of that talent reveals itself on a daily basis. I believe as does Scott that they will be in sold out arenas! When Scott informed his Mom that he had written some songs… She was surprised and asked “Where are they?” He replied casually that they were “in his head.” Then Leeni Siegel asked “well, how many do you have ?”and he replied…”300!!” WOW! What an amazing HEAD!! lol… She quickly said, “Let’s write them down then!!” The rest is history as they say!
We were lucky enough to have them perform at Our A~LEAGUE Celebration earlier this month and it was the hit of the event! I was so proud to introduce them to our families in attendance! Their performance is so full of passion AND a Neuro-Diverse MESSAGE. In my book that says it all! TONIGHT They will be performing in Laguna Beach at The Ocean Avenue Brewery! 9:30 P.M. So much FUN in store if you can make it! I have it on my radar and am planning on it.
Wyatt my 11 yr old non-verbal boy w/ AUTISM loves this music. Naturally he likes all music! Music soothes his soul when needed. That being said, he has a particular fondness for Scott, Crazy Tomes, Wadada and Jon’s awesome style. In the past few months I have been repeatedly encouraging my friends and others to watch “The Cave” on YouTube!! This is one of their BEST songs and the video is BOMB!! You will love it! Please take the time to view it …BELOW!! As I was saying Wyatt loves it. I play A LOT of different styles of music…when Wyatt hears ‘The Cave’ he comes from wherever he is~ straight to the great sound!!
Arrest My Sister even MORE POWERFUL than Barney?!! YOU GOTTA LOVE THAT! So COME ON OUT TONIGHT to The Ocean Ave Brewery and Rock-Out!! VISIT the ARREST MY SISTER website…to the left of this article (Interesting sites category) AND FOLLOW This Stellar BAND as they rocket to the TOP!!

This is how the “A~Leaguer’s” are feeling! Especially the CORE GROUP of the families that are “Making it Happen!” Building this plane while we fly it! My new favorite phrase that I TOTALLY COMPREHEND Now!!! We have learned so much this season. To carry forward into ALL the seasons that WILL follow!! We knew this would be good…but, what occurred here was so far beyond GOOD!
Much more like GREAT! Any negativity we have encountered is inconsequential !! When you are forging change there will ALWAYS Micheal Siegel the father of Rocker Scott…front man for ARREST MY SISTER wisely pointed that out to me yesterday! Thank you Micheal and wife Leeni you are an inspiration to US ALL! Airplane Flyers in the music world! However, I believe their “Airplane” will be morphing into a ROCKET!! The SHOWMANSHIP is just as awesome as the music!! PLEASE sign~up for their mailing list!! http://www.arrestmysister.com be some faction of resistance.
The weather was hot…so Lora M. made sure the kids had a water slide !! Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Games and Prizes. Awesome Music throughout and TROPHIES TOO !? Our kids were in heaven on the Diamond…with “Angels in the Outfield” What more could you want on a hot summer day?… Snow cones!! And we had those too! All bases covered! Thank you Mrs. Mancini!! Lora had the foresight to start this ball rolling and her idea to “CAP IT OFF” with the trophy Ceremony was brilliant. Completely evident in the photos I shot!! THANK YOU so much~ to the San Dias Little league for allowing OUR Dream Season and Party to happen!!
A lot of these trophy ceremonies are done at team parties nowadays. Having the players come up INDIVIDUALLY was a stroke of GENIUS!! The reactions they had were priceless…the looks of pride seemed so NEW. It makes me tear up just thinking back on it. I am also a little sad that Wyatt missed out. He had been at the party for the 1st 1/2 of the day…and just needed to go home and hang with Grandpa Bob. Not enough juice to make it to the end! Just the way it is with AUTISM sometimes. FLEXIBILITY is a must!
BE SURE to click on these pictures to see the BRIMMING PRIDE!!
This is not the last you will hear about this event…TMI too fit into one blog! To be continued…..

Seems I just heard about A-League a couple of days ago. What ?? Autism Baseball ? Little League teams for players with AUTISM !? Really? YES, REALLY !! And as the saying goes TIME FLIES when you’re having fun!!
The INAUGURAL SEASON ends this Sat.! Can’t believe how fast and smooth it went…considering (?). I mean, I had A LOT of people looking at me with consternation a few times. I love to chat it up as I go along my way. So, many people I come across know all about AutismHWY & A-League. Just can’t stop talking about them. I see both projects as a WORLD OF HELP!!
And a World of FUN!! I really didn’t think Wyatt would enjoy it as much as he has! Before his AUTISM set in…he would play a little whiffle ball. Hitting and running 2 yr.old style! When we would say, “Hey Batter-Batter” he would lift his leg like a pitcher on the mound ! But, that went away and I didn’t want to push it. I could get him to play ball /catch with me in the pool. So I guess I kind of settled for that. But, no more! This outlet to exercise and interaction with teammates, coaches and friendly families…AWESOME!
Something worth fighting for and celebrating!!! JUST WHAT WE’RE DOING!! Join US this Sunday in San Dimas at Marchant Park! 1-5 P.M. We will be there honoring our players. For giving it a shot! Learning a lot and making friends. Friends with AUTISM! What a concept. So many would have you believe that, that is impossible. Yet, we parents, coaches, teachers, siblings and care-givers …KNOW BETTER! We witnessed it! A pure success for kids and adults. It was a little bumpy here and there…but just like any good ride you just hold on and don’t let go!!
Which is EXACTLY RIGHT!! We will keep the ball rolling with a SUMMER/FALL Season!! All the info can be found at the SDLL website! You can click on from our Interesting Site section on the left!! Registration will be at the ballpark this Sunday and next Saturday! NOW back to the Celebration at hand!! We are really looking forward to this! There will be Games and Food for mind and belly! An Awesome Raffle…for FUN PRIZES…An Amazing Performance by an Amazing Band…ARREST MY SISTER for fantastic entertainment !! Last but not least the CELEBRATION of this accomplishment! The Accomplishment of starting out a season and seeing it through! A season like NO~OTHER, that had never been done before!! MAKING HISTORY …acquiring friends…learning the game… while having FUN!!
IT CAN’T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THAT!!
