So time is ticking again on this “month of awareness.” Thirty days has April…simply NOT ENOUGH! We are at a point in time that it is just silly to call the AWARENESS off ! So AUTISMHWY now declares the rest of this year and beyond…. Autism Awareness Decade! Seriously. Allocating a month to honor the spectrum is great… just DO NOT STOP the AWARENESS! We have alot of catching -up to do!!
Autism was only labeled in the early 40′s…so the first 20 yrs. it basically was ignored. Honestly it seems a portion of society would like to continue on with that ignorance. Chris Rock has a very funny routine… essentially saying that certain individuals love to”not know.” It seems to ring true. People just don’t want to broach the issue. It really isn’t that daunting. Just seems that way AUTISM has taken advantage of that …”love to not know” attitude.
With a complete lack of understanding…the syndrome has been getting away with murder! Well it is time for all of that nonsense to cease! I have a script and a plan to x-out that love to “NOT KNOW” Status! It will start with the smallest of children. When my Wyatt books are ready for school-age kids we can at least start some dialogue. The only kids with any awareness are either related to or have a close friend on the spectrum. Soon we can work on teaching ALL the rest!!
Seems children are ALWAYS the most receptive to new information and change. They will help to grease the wheels of change. When the adults read my comical & basically informative books …I’m hoping to teach them as well. It seems that NO-ONE has ever really sat down and told ANYONE basic autism info AROUND HERE!!?
I guess that shouldn’t come as such a shock. Heck 8 years ago when I got Wyatt’s diagnosis…I didn’t get much information. What I did get was quite hard to digest. Alot of the literature is in a “clinical-type” language that is hard for anyone to understand. It takes acclimation…and who’s got time for all that nonsense in the course of a busy day? You want information and you want it to be in ENGLISH…if Possible! I’m hoping I’m wrong and that there is NOW. some good literature for Mom’s w/ a new autism diagnosis.
This is precisely why I encourage people with knowledge to spread it…like WILDFIRE. These embers need stoking. We have been here waiting …smoldering , hoping for the world to catch on. Well, the world is a very busy place and WE… that want this wide-spread AWARENESS need to provide something for people to GRASP ON TO ! If the language is daunting and clinical…it’s easier to tune it out. I FEEL that, that is precisely what has happened! I know …because I wanted to tune it out too. Part of my “Fight or Flight” human instinct!! So making THIS INFORMATION more “brain~friendly”will be a start.
A good start in crossing the fire-line. A start in spreading some EASY to understand information to help the individuals on the SPECTRUM. Help them gain something all humans crave. ACCEPTANCE and UNDERSTANDING! It’s a BEAUTIFUL THING …and will be easy to give with a little bit of loving efforts.

I see it happening right and left. In all of these amazing “A-League” kids!! Most closely I see it in my boy Wyatt! In the last three baseball outings we’ve had …he has made a 360! From a boy that was feeling “lukewarm” at best~to a boy having a grand time! He had seemed unhappy… when it came to putting that helmet on, manuvering that bat and running those bases. Not the case today! He was on fire !
I love being out on the field with these kids! I am seeing alot of confidence and pride…growing and swelling. As well it should! I saw ALOT of extended family out there today. That really puts a spring in the players steps! Having Grampa Bob in right field with the video camera did the trick for Wyatt today. Hey… it just dawned on me ~was Wyatts 360 all about “his audience”?! LOL!! Is my boy a little more typical than others would like to admit!?
I believe that to be true sometimes! We all have tendencies to be typical AND autistic! More on that another day!
I have said that DUGOUTS are character builders and I mean it. The sportsmanship and comraderie evoked through these bi-weekly meetings is intense! You really become a family of sorts. Coach is like a Dad…guiding you through rough patches. Your teammates are the siblings flanking you as you perform these tasks. Team moms and fans are the open arms waiting for you to score at home plate!! A perfect chemistry for beautiful life-long connections! Something EXPERTS have told us will NEVER Happen!!
SO THERE~ EXPERTS!!! This was our 3rd game and for the Dodger’s… HOMERUNS keep piling up!! Our power hitters the Zapata Twins are keeping their even keel going! Strong and steady hitters that give our other players a great example. They are both very nice boys with a very cool demeaner. Their father Manual is a fantastic Coach/Dad …he worked some of that “Z”~Magic on Wyatt prior to yesterday’s game! He helped Wyatt at the tee on Thurs. & on Saturdays game…Wyatt took his 1st independent swing dropping the ball just off the tee! AWESOME!
That is what it is all about compassionate guidance and understanding! With that the possibilities here are endless. Is this sports experience going to “CURE” our players? NO. This is not about that elusive cure. We don’t have time to worry about a cure. If we spend all our time fretting and lamenting our condition we have no time left to enjoy our HERE AND NOW. So here and now…we have found an awesome outlet for our kids to
PLAY ball, BOND with team-mates and BUILD their already INCREDIBLE CHARACTER !!

…But DIFFERENT! Nice phrase! Here at AutismHWY.com we believe that…that is exactly what makes the world go round! Global thinking…It’s a BIG beautiful differing world we live in ! This profound saying has “come home” to Wyatt on a T~shirt for several yrs. now.
When Army Veteran Grampa BOB comes back from yet another Viet Nam trip. Same~ Same but Different! When you apply that to people on the spectrum verses typicals… truer words were never spoken.
Seems this saying is what the Vets and Villagers in Viet Nam have used to communicate for OVER 40 YRS.!! Arms are open …embracing the differences and celebrating the exchange! Much like what will happen once the AUTISMHWY is fully operable!!! People enjoying the “culture”~~OR the “actions”…the differences of others! Truly where HUMAN GROWTH and spirituality come from.
The positive affects people in the world bring to us. Allowing you to “Fly… from the inside.” Sharing experience is at the very core of our BEING HUMAN!
I love what Dr.Tony Attwood says about the hyper focus and control individuals on the spectrum exhibit. IT IS TO BE REVERED & CELEBRATED! My thoughts exactly!! Read MORE about the good Dr Attwood here http://www.tonyattwood.com.au/ Happily I am seeing this ATTITUDE more and more! We are ALL EVOLVING! Let’s face it. In the past AUTISM has had us down for the count…had its stranglehold on US. Now the tables are turning! With acceptance and understanding..the cards ~are laid-out! The game is recognizable. His hand becomes exposed!!
So as understanding and knowledge about individuals on the Spectrum becomes common. We can forge ahead!” SAME…SAME, But DIFFERENT!” People in the same world on different planes. Or people on the same plane in different worlds. However you view it…there is enough room for us to CELEBRATE what the other brings to the table! A” melting-pot luck” if you will!!
Realizing that we all have something outstanding to offer this world is what keeps us motivated! That sense of accomplishment and self worth We all need it DAILY!! We deserve it! Just like our Sons, Daughters, Brothers, Sisters, Cousins and friends with Autism and or Asperger Syndrome !!
In the past there have’nt been the venues for this TALENTED POPULATION! Now I see that changing and what a great day it is!! Autistic ONLY Little League Teams…Award Venues, Art shows, Musical Productions & Theatrical presentations!! Heck even a story-line in a NETWORK PRIME-TIME T.V. SHOW! Woo Hoo…seems like We are arriving!!
VIVA LA DIFFERENCE !!!

That’s a GOOD QUESTION! Which is exactly what I tell the kids in the new books about “Wy-Wy” coming SOON! For years now I have seen so many beautiful little “QUESTIONING EYES” looking our direction. It’s always the same …Wyatt’s self- stimulatory hand actions will catch the youngsters eye. From there its eyes to me then back to him ,etc… etc… etc… just like watching a tennis match! Sometimes the child will ask their parent why Wyatt is doing what Wyatt is doing?? I’d say 7 times out of 10 the parent will “hush” the child and pretend the question was never asked.
I assume that they must feel uncomfortable. I have to ask those people…can you think of any other questions your child asks that you just don’t address?! Is autism the proverbial “Hot Potato” ? Keep passing that sucker off …can’t get caught with that. Don’t want to “Go There.” Whatever… you want to call it. It seems to me ,to be a …”too busy” thing. People have seemingly always been too busy to “try” and understand the syndrome. Heck how many years were wasted considering it mental retardation?
That’s annoying to think of. So, moving on …to my passion! (some may say… MY obsession.) The passion I have to see people understanding and accepting of our autistic community! There are alot of issues that can “layer-up” on these kids. Some will have higher degrees of “said” issues than others… and vice -versa. In the books I keep it fairly simple and describe self- stimulating behaviors & sensory issues. That is the best start in my mind. If we can get the children to understand that Wyatt’s behaviors are driven by his “need to feel”, rather than just random outbursts. I believe that a calm understanding can begin for everyone. Autism is intimidating. YES , WE GET THAT!!
I have likened AUTISM to a BULLY. A bully that has been taking advantage of it’s “PUZZLING STATUS“! This is why it is impairitive to make the knowledge common! Strip this BULLY of its mystery and take away its overwhelming POWER. Taking away part of that mystery is how we can accomplish that…and so it starts with the education of everyone. Especially the kids! Our kids…PEERS. I trully believe that we can wait no longer! Once we shine the light on AUTISM the world will be a more a well- rounded place!
