That’s the Way We Roll

Craig Quat. WoW. Remember the name.

Paul-Constatin Cojocaru, Craig Quat and Archie David with a juggle board at the 2016 AWAF event.

He is by far one of the most amazing people to ever cross our path here on the AutismHWY!  Craig Quat and his uber creative company Quat Props is a game changer for people that like to challenge themselves, build skills and have fun while they are doing it. Craig’s talent and love of CIRCUS has become his life’s calling. It has catapulted him into the fantastic and creative purpose to make juggling accessable for ALL people. The importance of this work is easy to see as the mind/ body and central nervous system connections are truly the heart and soul of being human. Craig has found an amazing way to work the inroads of connection through his love of juggling and CIRCUS!

Craig and  partners actively teach people to organize their brains by juggling! At first this may seem a bit mind boggling yet, Craig clearly knows and demonstrates rapidly the immense value juggling has. Through the creation of his “Juggle board” and other engagingly fun exercises he utilizes the importance of focus, connection and rythym that will spill over into everyday tasking. Watching him work with varied individuals live at the 2016 ANCA World Autism Festival was truly fascinating and very moving. You could literally see him gage the inner thinking of each person he was “juggling” with. Through this rythmic creative patterning Craig stimulates quick rolling -turn taking actions which must occur sequentually, causing many brain connections to be made. Naturally brilliant! Just take a look at this video and Craig’s entire Vimeo channel, you will be astounded…

We see Craig’s skill set and point of view as a game changer for all people not just the Autistic population. Rapid fire rolling which uses the left and right brain in conjunction, is oh so helpful for so many of us at any given time in our lives. We can ALL use some fine tuning while multi-tasking and literally JUGGLING LIFE!

autistic renaissance

Craig’s ambidextrous ways will amaze and delight you, please explore his Quat Props website and all of the work he does. Meeting him this fall at the 2016 ANCA World Autism Festival was a HUGE highlight of 2016 and our great DECADE! We have always believed this was the game-changing decade for Autistic people and Craig Quat “plays” right into the emerging Autistic Renaissance perfectly. His innovative use of the CIRCUS EQUIPMENT he loves and/or develops brings great joy and quick success. I was permanently moved by his presentation. This type of activity brings it all home for people that have a mind/body disconnect. Challenging your system to travel in ways it is not used to is a daunting task for many. Until now I have not seen it done so fluidly with such intensity and such loving zeal. Craig Quat will change the world with his ability to teach “juggling life skills” and the ripple effects that will bring to all of us.

Put him on your list of VERY important innovators to follow!

Nervous by Nature

We are. Each and every one of us. It is the essential ingredient in the human condition. We are ruled and driven by our own unique central nervous system and what it is or is not capable of. How our brains work in conjunction with it or battle against it. We as people are akin to electrical snowflakes traveling varied environments we sometimes, breeze through, clash with or melt in. There you have it~ the basis for all behavior. The ABC’s of it. Seems simple, right?

Uniquely crafted to experience the world differently

Uniquely crafted to experience the world differently

Not so. Just ask a “behaviorist” they have a whole alphabet of labels for us!! First of all, people are very unaware of their own central nervous systems and how they should be cherished, studied, understood and protected. We are taught that our bodies are “our temples” without much explanation of just what that entails. Our bodies are our circuit boards that channel and guide the energies God has given us genetically. We all have an infrastructure for these energy codes to travel on. This is where the sameness ends. With differing levels and codes of energy our electric snowflakes swirl but, swirl differently! How our unique energy codes are able to travel and navigate this central nervous system, or HWY Infrastructure is where we need to focus our attention and acceptance. Promoting understanding of how we are ALL swirling the same and differently at the same time. Just as it should be.

So many paths of connectivity.OUR AutismHWY in L.A. California.

So many paths of connectivity.OUR AutismHWY in L.A. California.

Understanding the different HWYS of navigation each person needs to utilize. How one needs to travel in life to feel comfortable and safe. What each persons strengths and limitations are. Anyone that drives can understand that analogy. We all have ways that are uniquely comfortable and familiar to us. Ways we travel to seek our own personal success and freedom. Unique as we are we all want the same outcome for the most part. To feel happy and safe within our families, within our communities, within our world. To further feel as if we contribute to that happiness by creating our own self esteem and human worth no matter the differences.

Why do anything else? Whoever celebrated SAMENESS?

This system we are blessed with drives these electrical signals to our structures informing us how to behave, how to ‘feel it.’ If we all behave and ‘feel it’ differently that helps us realize we all experience life on varying degrees and differing levels. Nerves and neurons (HWYS and vehicles) constantly driving us to where we are going. What we all need to do is take a long look at our unique mapping and the ways we all travel on our individual systems. Our delicate infrastructures and what they will support. More importantly what they will not support. They definitely DO NOT support every one of us driving on the same road in the same direction at the same time. We need to understand that more fully and celebrate this divergence of humanity. Be accepting of this simple truth and stop demanding that people experience the world as you do. All  people have unique and valid differences. These differences deserve understanding, recognition and respect. Despite labels placed on people like high or low functioning that can constantly be re-shaped and transcended. Allow yourself and allow others the dignity of being as they are. Allow people to “feel it” and evolve as they were born to.

PLAIN and SIMPLY, diverse reactions and feelings should be considered the “norm.”

“SKIN~BOY”

Is what Grampa Bob began calling Wyatt. I can’t remember exactly when that started. It was clear though that Wyatt liked to rub his skin, your skin…a random strangers skin! WHOOPS…Wyatt! “Get back here”…Wrangle wrangle! That has happened before. Beware of Tactile A.S. individuals when you wear those summer tank-tops LADIES! Wyatt will put his lips on the soft skin of his own under-arm. People think he’s smelling his arm-pits! Makes me think of that crazy actress on Saturday Nite Live!

It can be COMICAL…but, really not a laughing matter. JUST a big thing for A.S.D. (Autism Spectrum Disorder) INDIVIDUALS.~~”SENSORY ISSUES!”~~ I mean, WE ALL have them BUT, people on the SPECTRUM really have them! We as people love to be TACTILE some MORE THAN others!! (lol) Touching, and being touched! There is alot to be said on that subject !! We as people are VERY SENSORY ORIENTED! Really, if you think about it ALL LIVING CREATURES ARE!

Mechanisms for survival ALL stem and revolve around the 5 senses! Taste, Touch, Sight, Smell and Sounds! People on the SPECTRUM will have different degrees of “caliber” on this 5~sense system. That is part of what people “don’t get” about Autism. Individuals are JUST THAT …Individuals with greatly varying degrees of impairment! Most OTHER ” Syndromes”… or “Diseases”can be generalized. People “afflicted- suffer” in the same degree for the most part. Not with AUTISM and that is only a small part of it’s COMPLEXITIES!

However, realizing THAT CONCEPT alone IS KEY! Because it is pervasive and underlying! A great start in UNDERSTANDING this “many- headed animal! ” Wyatt’s proclivity toward rubbing his SKIN was a subtle CLUE! I never knew it at the time…but, I SEE IT NOW. His tactile needs were presenting themselves. His lack of “Central Nervous System CONNECTORS”…had him seeking out EXTRA STIMULATION! He would be on the concrete patio rolling around in his walker BACK & FORTH through the sheets drying on the line! So CUTE…I thought.

Anytime we would enter a building with a huge TILED FLOOR…down he would go. Laying as much of his skin as possible on the cool flat sensation! LIKE A CAT… Wyatt would sprawl! I found him like that in the bath tub a time or two! I really did’nt think ANYTHING of it! Looking back now …I SHOULD HAVE! He was walking, talking hitting the milestones. He’s fine, SO WHAT if he morphs into a “CAT” every now and then!!? My kid feels the world through his skin…”SO~ WHAT?” At least he did’nt put everything in his mouth! ….. I THOUGHT !!

Imagine your body has the NEED TO FEEL in ways that typical people cannot fathom… Everywhere you go you have these urges to FLOP AND DROP. Or shake and wiggle HANDS & ARMS to feel SOMETHING! Generally society does’nt understand this! More than likely they will assume the individuals are just spoiled brats, acting -out ,acting “inappropriately! ” When in REALITY…they were witnessing the whole OTHER ANIMAL that we are DEALING WITH ! ~~AUTISM~~ Until there is some kind of way to re-route electronic brain signals…we will just have to continue DEALING with our kids “unorthedox need to feel! ” The matter at hand is to get dialogues going to PROMOTE FRIENDSHIP through COMMON UNDERSTANDING! This NEEDS TO HAPPEN…Sooner than Later!!

” I FEEL IT IN MY SKIN!! ”
