HI THERE, HI THERE, HI THERE! (?) !! I just came from tucking Wyatt in and I truly HEARD …a sing-songy version of the above mentioned! I’ve heard it before, just like ; YADA,YADA,YADA & DIGA,DIGA,DIGA. Along with several other … variations on a theme that have rotated in & out over the years. But there was something different about this time.

I exclaimed “Wyatt, you SAID Hi There!!” He proudly giggled…into a chirp simultaneously bouncing on belly, burying face in pillow! So between the two of us we said it a hundred times giggling and bouncing! Then I asked him the big question, “are you going to tell everyone hi there at school tomorrow?” He looked at me with the BIGGEST-WYATT smile giggling..”hi there hi there hi there.” So, I am happy to believe him as I sit here in this moment. I will go to sleep and hope my sweet boy keeps his loving words! In the morning we will find out at… ! If nothing else…he and I just had an incredible moment, that isn’t going anywhere! Such as life… in our autistic world, incredible moment after incredible moment (with the occasional meltdowns!)

WE ALL KNOW how our kids amaze us everyday. Fighting little spirits of pure heart! Kids that like all others want to be comfortable and happy. Which is quite the feat sometimes with the cards that have been dealt them. It can be like a science experiment learning how to make each individual comfortable in their own skin!

As parents of these beautiful people we begin to make a FORMULA. A formula that works for your child and family. When you are lucky you are surrounded with people that understand this. Schools that will take an “out of the box” approach like Leroy Haynes. Tailor making a program geared toward the individual needs of each child. It is also important to realize that some “traditional teaching methods” usually just don’t work for autistics.

Wyatt’s school has changed his whole demeanor. Even though he is NON-VERBAL I sense that he feels better understood. He is blessed to attend a school that takes the time to keep up with all emerging ideas and inform the community with FREE GUEST SPEAKERS and TRAININGS!

Just today…a massage therapist came to the school! When I picked Wyatt up I was informed that he was the one that had the longest massage!! I wasn’t surprised!!! Think…SQUEEZEBOX! HEY, now it’s dawning on me … if I want WORDS I”ll need to get my massage therapist certification!!!

NONot the one that The Who sang about….The one that TEMPLE GRANDIN mooed about! Wow…watching HBO’s amazing portrayal of her life made me so happy! The story behind her miraculous discoveries…make it so clear to people how autistic people often feel. Completely OVERWHELMED. I urge everyone to make a point to watch this film, and suggest others do as well. The production is simply BRILLIANT. I wish it was eligible for oscar consideration!

When you see what the young Temple ‘innately’ knew about her mind’s need for organization. How she did not want to go on to college without her SQUEEZEBOX. The resistance of others to believe in what she KNEW …and her ultimate victory against ignorance. An Autistic person healing her world, the cows world and the world of knowledge about AUTISM! Talk about a hero of Olympian quality!! I was dumbfounded the first time I became aware of the squeezebox technique.

Wyatt was at summer day-camp and was generally very unhappy with having to meet and greet…moving from 1 activity to the next. A fabulous O.T. Kristen …began to squeeze and roll , squeeze and press, again and again. To my amazement I saw Wyatt “like putty”… transform into a receptive boy! She looks at me & says he needs alot…handing him back off to me ! That was my lesson…and I took it. Wyatt has been getting squeezed and rolled for years now, you’de think he was the …’dough-boy! We also found out about the BODYSOCK that summer! What a life-saver. For those that don’t know the B-sock is essentially a lycra envelope to get inside of!!! Wyatt can’t leave home without it. We are about ready for a new one (growing boy! ).

I have had success with bodysocks purchased here at One Stop Sensory Shop.

Lucky for us Wyatt does not usually have an aversion to touch as did Temple. So his deep pressure squeezes are a much loved activity in our family! So much so with his Grampa Bob that they wear out the springs on every recliner we have had! It JUST works plain and simple. I have had to squeeze him out in public from time to time…and I get some crazy looks. I think it may look as if we are trying to restrain the individual when that is just NOT the case.

So…take a look at HBO’s outstanding movie… learn how deep pressure helps organize the mind and meet AUTISMS SUPER-HERO Temple Grandin!

Hello…My name is Kelly Green, mother of an almost 11 yr. old amazing autistic son! His name is Wyatt Griffin Green…and in his short life, I have learned so much…and, so little! My “Oxymoron”.

When I think about that …I have to laugh, so often I’ve felt that way…like an Oxy-moron. How about the time Wyatt was really thirsty, we entered the ‘ Subway’ I approached the counter ,Wyatt darts for the first available drink of an “unknowing-distracted” customer! Oh the look of relief on Wyatt’s parched face! Oh the look of horror, then disgust on the grumpy man’s face! Of course my apologies and explanation spills forth…to a…STONE-WALL. Can you say…AWKWARD?! Fortunately times they are -a-changin!!! More and more the STONES are falling from that WALL…as I’m met with a knowing look, a smile and a nod…when” another “of my speils spills forth! Wyatt is a miracle in this world like all the rest of us …EVEN… if he does randomly steal drinks!!!

My beauty giving the thumbs up!

My beauty giving the thumbs up!

My Mission …is to PROMOTE FRIENDSHIP THROUGH COMMON UNDERSTANDING! Alot can be learned from these awesome , amazing PURE PEOPLE and is on a mission to PROVE THAT ! Linking ourselves in an “Informative Friendship Network” will be the building blocks to understanding. As our extended family members link and learn from each other…to help in spreading our words. When the people of our beautiful communities understand “us” when we are out in it…miracles will abound.

I actually see OUR COMMUNITY as an opportunity for typical people to “step-up” and better themselves. Something we have been lacking as a society in our busy self driven lives. Autism has become so prevalent…I guess I’m thinking it’s time to enjoy us…and just tell people “Hey take the time people to just stop & smell the autism”!!? I smell ROSES!!! In the future we will be needing more and more mentors to help guide our growing population. Assisted living situations will be expanding in all kinds of directions.

Common knowledge & understanding of autistics and their idiosyncrasies will be imperative. I already see some great programs to encourage mentoring…and I am quite sure those involved will feel an unbelievable fulfillment.

AUTISMHWY will be a place of celebration to enjoy our differences and learn through our similarities. I am so looking forward to meeting the amazing people on the AUTISMHWY!
