Our Chalk Festival’s Forever Angel… Louise

This week has been very difficult on the AutismHWY because we have lost our original patron saint, Catherine Louise Kirkland. My mother, Wyatt’s grandmother, our rock of love and acceptance. Her calm and steady character has guided our HWY like the best GPS. Now she’s taking a new, higher road where we will all meet again ETA…TBD.

Louise spreading THE JOY.

Louise spreading THE JOY.

Louise’s strength, love and support allowed the AutismHWY’s annual Chalk Festival  now permanently located in downtown Covina California to emerge powerfully. She came  from Cleveland Ohio to Covina  in the late 1950′s. Began working in Covina, met a 1951 Covina High School graduate got married and gave birth to 3 babies just blocks away from Heritage Plaza where we gather to free express each spring. She was grounded in this beautiful community as are we.

Her willingness to follow our AutismHWY dreams helped make the event possible… manifesting itself in countless, selfless ways. From pulling the first $500.00 permit in the city of Azusa 9 years ago to picking up the Artist’s favorite breakfast burritos at El Merendero near the L.A.Co fairgrounds. Louise was always there to back us up.

Her ability to multi-task and support our beloved event financially and emotionally has been epic over the years. Her energy lingers and will be one of the everlasting strengths driving OUR FORCES that will always be chalking and talking about LOVE and ACCEPTANCE on the AutismHWY.

So long Louise …until we chalk again. Xo…

The Forest Awaits You

There is an age-old saying about looking to the forest by perceiving beyond the trees.

Go to the source #ActuallyAutistic people for inside information...

I think most folks have learned if you only focus on one tree you will likely miss that the tree is part of a larger community, a stand, a grove or a FOREST.

Cedar_Tree_NL

Looking at the entire FOREST is always hard for people living in and concerned only about …just one tree.

Which becomes the proverbial, vicious cycle. Trying to understand a single tree can only be done by gathering info from the stand, the beautiful grove… the FOREST of information.

My son stands in his Autistic roots. The roots and branches of a tree naturally trellising through the fabric of his glorious DNA. It colors and shades his sensory world and his growth- grafting- patterns with unique and challenging differentials.

He does not stand alone. There are hundreds and thousands of Autistic people that experience the world as he does and/or have an understanding of those differentials each other experience. An actual inner-standing of his Neurodivergent experience. Over the past decades the community of Autistic adults have grafted together, compared notes and have realized this wonderful fact filled FOREST.

When you view the vast amounts of #ActuallyAutistic people on-line and in the world as a FOREST of knowledge, sharing crucial information about individual trees… you can breathe in that life sustaining information.

bubbles

You can research the Autism traits and factors that seem to be pertinent to the tree you love and care for. There is absolutely no excuse or reason to hang out on a limb in one tree when there is an amazing informative canopy, a FOREST of wonder, discovery and successful truths awaiting you and your Autistic loved one.

Chalking Up Infinite Friendships

If you have never been to a Chalk Festival you should really remedy that. So much connection is happening at each and every event. Cities and communities are now feeling the ‘power of the chalk’ and festivals highlighting street art are popping up on many HWY’s circling the globe!
GLOBAL Recognition...for ALL of US!

Artists have always known the healing powers that free expression addresses. Art helps us ALL define where and how we live in life. So naturally, chalk lends itself well to every possible community expression out there! It’s a relatively cheap medium and has maximum transformative power without permanently changing the community outwardly.

Inwardly…well, that is THE whole “other story” isn’t IT?

Chalk Art Festivals enable us to experience a rollercoaster of thought and emotion encompassed within a colorful blend of sensory bliss. So, IN REALITY all chalk festivals are theme parks for the soul. A stroll through a park that can and WILL bring us to places we never knew we would land! Places we need to BE.
cf17sn Stacy Nalapraya dreamed up this powerful imagery last year which colorfully brands the world as it is, a place of infinite natural diversity. When I see this it resonates powerfully within me and I believe within us ALL. It depicts that powerful DREAM in which this event was created and will always reside. A home where we can all assemble as valued souls with something wonderful to contribute no matter who or how we are. A world of acceptance and enjoyment is embodied at these infectious outdoor affairs. Ask anyone that has attended our festival as we embark on year #8. Fabulous friends from near and far connecting these simple yet crucial -life affirming dots- with drums, love and chalk!
